Effective aerial surveying needs to see the invisible. The DJI Mavic 3M combines a 20MP RGB camera with four 5MP multispectral cameras β green, red, red edge and near-infrared β in a compact, foldable 951g airframe. It's the benchmark platform for crop health monitoring, precision agriculture and natural resource surveys in Tasmania and across Australia.
The Mavic 3M's five-camera gimbal captures RGB and multispectral data simultaneously. The four multispectral sensors (G/R/RE/NIR) detect subtle reflectance differences invisible to the human eye β revealing crop stress, disease pressure, moisture variation and growth anomalies across entire paddocks in a single flight. The RGB camera (20MP, 4/3 CMOS, mechanical shutter) captures reference imagery and enables visual reconstruction of the landscape at the same time.
A built-in sunlight sensor captures solar irradiance alongside every image, allowing automatic light compensation during 2D reconstruction. This produces significantly more accurate and consistent NDVI, GNDVI and NDRE indices over time β particularly important when comparing data across seasons or variable weather conditions.
The included RTK module delivers centimetre-level positioning accuracy (Β±10cm horizontal and vertical) by synchronising the flight controller, cameras and RTK data stream in microseconds. This precision enables high-accuracy aerial surveys without ground control points β reducing ground preparation time and making large-scale operations far more practical.
GNSS support covers GPS, Galileo, BeiDou and GLONASS simultaneously. Without RTK, vision positioning provides Β±30cm horizontal accuracy, suitable for routine scouting flights.
With a maximum flight time of 43 minutes and a maximum range of 32km, the Mavic 3M can survey up to 200 hectares in a single mission at standard survey altitudes. This makes whole-farm surveys practical in a single morning, and enables regular monitoring intervals that were previously only cost-effective on large operations with fixed-wing aircraft.
The Mavic 3M integrates directly with DJI Terra and the DJI SmartFarm Platform. DJI Terra processes RGB and multispectral imagery into georeferenced orthomosaics, DSMs, point clouds and NDVI maps. The SmartFarm Platform adds intelligent crop analysis β automatically identifying tree counts, detecting anomalies like emergence deficiencies and weed pressure, and generating variable-rate prescription maps that agricultural drones like the Agras T50 and T100 can execute directly.
Orchard mapping is fully supported: Mavic 3M follows terrain on sloped landscapes, DJI Terra reconstructs high-resolution 3D orchard maps, identifies individual trees, and generates optimised spray routes β making precision orchard management practical for Tasmanian fruit and nut growers.
The omnidirectional binocular vision system provides obstacle sensing in all directions β forward (0.5β200m detection), backward, lateral, upward and downward. APAS 5.0 automatically routes around obstacles during autonomous missions. Advanced Return to Home uses real-time 3D environmental modelling for safe recovery in complex terrain including orchards and forestry blocks.
DJI O3 Industry Edition delivers 1080p/30fps live view at up to 15km (FCC)/8km (CE β applicable in Australia), with strong signal stability even in areas with medium RF interference. Latency is approximately 200ms. The Mavic 3M also supports the DJI Cellular dongle for 4G network connectivity β enabling real-time image upload to DJI SmartFarm Platform and remote mission monitoring from anywhere with mobile coverage.
At 951g (with RTK), the Mavic 3M operates well under the 25kg MTOW threshold and does not require a Remote Pilot Licence for commercial operations under CASA's standard operating conditions. This makes it the most accessible professional agricultural survey tool available β any farmer, agronomist or land manager can operate it legally for commercial purposes without a flight licence.
